Kartik Aaryan gives a Dhamakedar Performance in Dhamaka !
(An unofficial remake of a Korean movie " The Terror Live " released in 2013.)
Director : Ram Madhvani
Writers : Ram Madhvani, Puneet Sharma
Stars : Kartik Aaryan, Mrunal Thakur, Amruta Subhash
DHAMAKA is the story of a prime time reporter getting the biggest scoop of his career. Arjun Pathak (Kartik Aaryan) was a reputed TV reporter of Bharosa 24x7. He is married to Saumya Mehra Pathak (Mrunal Thakur).
Arjun Mathur who receives a surprising phone call that alters his destiny and that of everyone who is even remotely correlated with him including his divorced wife and news reporter. After a terror attack on the sea link in Mumbai, Arjun Mathur conducts an exclusive interview with the terrorist -but it doesn’t go as planned; live on air, the terrorist terrifies to blow up the bridge Arjun’s wife is reporting from.
Who is the unknown man? What does he want? The voice on the phone becomes a beacon towards which barrels Aryan’s ratings-hungry boss Ankita Malaskar (Amruta Subhash), who does only what ‘the channel’ wants, ethics be damned. The caller wants a powerful politician to apologise for something he (the caller) believes led to the death of three persons, and he wants Arjun’s help. So, there’s your conflict: the reporter who claims that he parlays only the truth and nothing but the truth, and the desperate caller who wants his voice to be heard.
The first half will give you no reason to complain as the makers neatly explain the setting, the dynamics between the various characters and why Arjun has got demoted. The way Arjun uses his divorce papers to make notes is quite assuming and shows that the director has tried to make the product stand out. The scene where Jayant Patil’s deputy Subhash Mathur (Vishwajeet Pradhan) comes to the studio and speaks to Raghubeer is a terrific scene and will leave viewers astonished. Another heart-in-the-mouth scene is when Saumya attempts to save a girl from a car before it falls off the Sea Link. The second half, too, has its share of good scenes but due to the above-mentioned glitches, the impact is diluted.
The storytelling is such that viewers can’t help but get lost in the world shown by the talented director. He also raises the tension levels very well, leaving audiences to wonder what will happen next.
Kartik Aaryan is known for comic and light-hearted roles but here he gives a terrific performance. In no way you can say that this is the same person from Pyar ka Punchnaama. From now onwards Kartik Aaryan will be getting offers to play more wide range roles. Mrunal Thakur is mentioned first in the opening credits, before Kartik. Her role is also credited as a special appearance and she does very well. Amruta Subhash acts brilliantly. We know her range from movies like Gully boy and web show Sacred Games. She carries this roll also with same energy and enthusiasm.Rest of the supporting cast does well.
Songs in the movie are not like typical Bollywood movies which appear out of no where, instead the songs are properly mixed in the scenes and actually makes sense. Manu Anand's cinematography is a bit shaky but that adds to the tension.
Dhamaka is its own kind of thriller, this one is having the best performance from Kartik Aryan. Some would say that the second half or climax is not good, but that totally depends on the audience.
I myself liked the whole film.
I would rate it 3.5/5.
